I discovered the incredible Miu Miu Penny Loafer on a trip to Italy a few months ago. After spotting it at the source - the Miu Miu store in Milan - I tried it on, I went away and thought about it. I tried it on again.
The shoe comes in various iterations so there was a lot to consider.
Ultimately though, I realized it was the ‘vintage effect’ loafer in white that stole my heart. So I took the plunge and bought it. I’m so glad I did.
I’d actually been looking for a white loafer for a couple of years. There were lots of nice ones around but when I put them on they just looked….well, white. And somehow lacking in subtlety despite their neutral hue.
The unique detailing of this pair is what won me over. It has a worn look, which gives it a large dose of effortless appeal. Along with that, the shoe has a substantial slightly masculine silhouette. These qualities I think, are what sets it apart.
Despite solid proportions though, it’s an extremely comfortable shoe. It moulds to your foot quickly and provides good support. Which explains why I often wear mine all day.
In fact I reach for this amazing shoe all the time. I like roomy clothes and it just seems to lighten the overall look and balance everything out.
But the versatility doesn’t stop there. It also looks great with slimmer pieces such as a straight leg jean or trouser. And I think it would look incredible with a midi skirt and ankle socks, although this is something I have yet to try.
The shoe has a rubber sole which provides good grip even in the wet, making it a perfect option almost year round. And It holds up extremely well, showing virtually no signs of wear. I guess the vintage effect has something to do with this.
There really isn’t anything negative I can say about this incredible shoe - aside from the fact that it’s very pricey ($1,170). Still, for all the reasons I’ve outlined I think it’s well worth the investment.
A final thing to note, sizing is slightly large. I’m a 38.5 to 39 and the 38.5 is perfect with a sock, but also without.
A huge thanks to
for contributing her review, go check out her Substack here.I took this opportunity to challenge myself to round up all the best of the recommended loafers from Substack’s chats with the caveat that they are under $600. I present to you my findings since loafers seem to be the definitive shoe of fall and we all need a pair. And may I note that all the most recommended loafers look strikingly similar! The Jamie Haller loafers are the most beloved among the Substack chats but sizing seems to vary wildly so maybe scroll the chats for tips if that is your favorite!

I love a loafer roundup. Loafers are one of my favorite shoes to wear. I own the Elba and a pair of Jamie Haller’s loafers so if anyone has any questions — I’d be happy to answer them.
Also would like to add that loafers are one place I will splurge because I’ve had loafers for 15+ years that are still going strong.
Did (what felt like) a big thing and bought some Gucci Jordan loafers from the local consignment shop last week. Something about finding them in person, them fitting perfectly, and needing some retail therapy - the combination got me. But I will never regret it! Good loafers are forever, I truly believe that. And I love how lately we've seen them in more casual iterations, which makes me realize I can wear mine 24/7 :)
