Everywhere you turn Levi’s are on the butts of every influencer. The trouble is, it is VINTAGE Levi’s that are on their butts and tracking down a pair, in your accurate size, can be a Herculean feat. It was frustration with that dilemma that sent me into the arms of my local brick and mortar Levi’s store in fall of 2023. After trying on nearly every styled offered, I realized that the Levi’s 501 90s are a damn good imitation of vintage jeans AND I walked out with 3 pairs in various colors, sizes and inseams.
Now I realize I’m going to sound like a sponsored post for Levi’s but I suppose that’s what genuine fandom is like. My visit to the Levi’s store completely won me over because of two little words; FREE ALTERATIONS.
At your local Levi’s store, they will alter any pair you purchase. That means they will hem them if you are on the short side (like me) or they will even move the button on the waistband so if the pants fit your booty but not your waist, the problem is solved.
The 501 90s fit is a lovely mid-rise jean with a straight leg. The website describes them as loose but I found them to be a true straight leg. I own a pair in white (called Yacht Time which I can’t find online anywhere) and a pair in black (Rinsed Blacktop) which I purchased in my true size. The black I had hemmed but I kept the white because the edge is raw so I can cut if I want to someday.
Then I purchased a third pair in a dark wash (named Up We Go) up one size and extended inseam so I could create the cuffed look I was interested in. The jeans are freshly washed in this picture but they tend to sit lower on the hips and puddle nicely when not cuffed.
I spied this light wash (Clear Advantage) when creating this newsletter and love the colorway. Should I need a new pair of pants, I know which pair I’ll buy.
The Levi’s website has 12 colorways on it right now, but I don’t see two of the rinses that I have so I think their offerings vary.
Also, it does feel like Levi’s are offering a perpetual sale, so there’s that.
There are so many great pairs of denim and a lively chat in Meg Strachan’s channel brought up tons of other great options; I own a pair of SLVRLAKE and Re/Done each that I like as well. And, obviously,
is the real expert on denim. She recommended Reformation’s Cynthia because of her connections to the costume designer on Euphoria.Here’s a round-up of the other oft recommended denim.
But, do tell, what is your go-to denim?
I would love to hear from you! Do you have a new-found product that you’d recommend (like
’s slip dress)? Or a product that you can’t stop buying (like ’s sandals)? I’m also dying to hear about those products that you bought that should come with a warning label (maybe you turned around and resold it?).If you’d like to contribute a review click here;
I honestly did the same thing last year and fell in love with the 501 90s! With that said have you ever checked out Jean Genie Vintage? She’s incredible and if you follow her instructions/ measurements, you will get the perfect pair. The vintage pair of 501s I scored from her are perfection!
Buying three pairs of Levi’s 501 90s made me realise that different washes of the same cut are not the same! I have a true blue denim pair (shade Drew Me In) that I love - they’re extremely comfortable and I’m obsessed with the fit. I also own the Rinsed Blacktop but bizarrely, even though I was on the hunt for true black jeans, they don’t really feel like jeans to me. I think I prefer a washed black for denim. I recently bought the ecru for another option but I think I’m going to return them because the material feels much thinner and they don’t feel like jeans to me!
